I have had an 86 900S 16V 2dr since almost new (dealer demo). It now has 101,000 miles. Here's where I found problems:
Front brake calipers: I'm on the forth set - the third were faulty and replaced after 500 miles.
AC: Compressor leaked after 2 years. I had it replaced under warranty once. Replacement leaked after 2 years. I eventually replaced the second compressor and converted to R134. Since seem to have a slow leak somewhere.
Radio/antenna. Had some problems over the years with the radio, and with the antenna mast - fairly classic 900 issues.
Other classic 900 issues: vacuum lines (leading to cold start problems, and no cruise control), trouble starting in extreme cold (below -10F) due to flooding caused by cold start valve - or so I'm told.
Good points of the 86: No wiring issues. I had an 85 (4 dr) and the wiring fell apart as expected. The 86 notchback is a very stiff car. I also have a 92 900 Convertible and the differences are incredible.
Personally, I think the 86 2dr is the best car I've owned. True that 4 doors are more practical, but my two children came along after the car, and a Turbo would be great as the 900S lacks guts.
