Your most reliable model will be a 900 5 speed non turbo, simply because they have fewer parts to deal with that can go wrong. S denotes alloy wheels, leather interior, central locking, metallic paint, cruise control and power windows. Turbo makes more power, however I would avoid an older Turbo as they are probably driven harder.

A word of caution though. As much as I love these cars, I don't recommend them to someone getting their first car and looking for cheap reliable transportation, (especially for commuting). 15 years of even regular use will overcome the best engineering and things will be worn out, wearing out or just abused to the point of failure. Parts are not cheap and good experienced mechanics are not common.

So unless you are prepared to diagnose problems (we are here to help, although not at the side of the road when you need us) and are skilled enough do the inevitable repairs yourself (clutch, oil pump seals, harmonic balancer, CV joints, ball joints, shocks, bushings, fuel pump, cooling systems, electrical, sagging headliners, steering column joints, leaks, power steering racks, cam chain tensioners, noisy lifters, broken hood latch cables, - hell, just read the posts of what we do with our spare time!), I recommend you think again about a SAAB of this age for a first car.

If you need a first car to get to your first job that is a 50 mile commute each day, you should do yourself a favor and spend your $3,000 on a used Japanese car (Honda, Toyota)or put a downpayment on a new Hyundai or Kia with a comprehensive warranty program and make the low monthly payments (they are practically giving those things away-take adavntage of it). Then you will have a new car with working A/C, new transmission, tires, etc. Yeah, your life will suck because you will not have a cool car, but expensive repairs suck too. Your boss will like you more because you show up everyday on time, you will get promoted, then after a while you will be able to afford a newer SAAB model with a warranty. Make an old SAAB your hobby, not your must have transortation. The odds of getting a well cared for car of that age for cheap are slim.

My two euros worth, but best of luck.
