My 91 900S is the first car I've owned, and I wouldn't want it any other way. Being a gearhead (recording engineer), but not having any real experience working on cars (I had never even changed a tire before), I wanted something that I could learn on. Saab has one of the best DIY support networks around, and its uniqueness fit my style. So... I did my research and stayed away from the tempting/tempermental Turbo models. I test drove as many as I could to establish a baseline for performance/handling. And most importantly, I was patient. Then I found the *almost* perfect 1st 91 900S (and fell in love). Black and tan, no rust, new tires, Bently manual included, and it had the SPG panels on it. Most of the usual major repairs had already been taken care of-new tranny, head gasket, A/C. I bought it and plunged right in. Since buying it last summer, I've grown confident that I will at least think about doing any repair it needs. Tomorrow I'll replace the original clutch (155,231 miles) and have paid only 200$ for the parts. Bringing total repair cost for the year to 275$. My other car-owning friends hate me. Of course, I do live in Chicago, and near public transit, so I can get around without it when I need to. And I'm walking distance from SaabTech if I ever get WAY over my head.

So to actually adress your question. If you take your time shopping, are willing/wanting to learn to do your own repairs, and have an alternative mode of transportation in a pinch, go for it. Otherwise buy a Civic.
