Thanks a heap for the additional info. Yeah, I too have read/seen all manner of air induction modifications intended to draw cool air. I do very much like the ram air concept as an easy modification. Along with the exhaust system and other fuel and timing related modifications, the idea of helping as much cool air get to your engine is a sound idea. What I don't like about using my driver side hood vent for a scoop is eliminating it as a heat vent, but I agree with you that it's a prime location for a scoop.
To me, the ideal location is the forward edge of the hood itself, where you have perhaps the most force of air. Every so often I look at and consider some way to design a ram style scoop that will fit where the stock 8V air scoop is normally located, but designed more effectively by removing obstacles such as the metal lip on the front of the radiator housing, also fashioning an angled shroud of sorts immediately behind the top grill that directs more air to the scoop.
I currently have in place an incomplete version of the above idea. I have a stock 8V air scoop connected in it's original spot, with the tail end laid flat across the IC piping, connecting to a plastic turbo inlet pipe (from the rubber snorkle to the turbo unit) which I cut to fit into the end of the 8V scoop. It ends just in front of the area where the 16V version air intake is located in it's stock position just outside the engine compartment above the left front wheel.
I've even thought of carving out a bit of the hood edge itself, then using fiberglass to afix and mold a scoop under the hood, then venting it to the filter box in some creative way as you've described. Using fiberglass you can expertly mold, file, sand, then repaint the effected area so it doesn't look like a chop job.
