I must admit I don't know anything about the ignition system. My car was loving the 70 degree weather for the last few months and when I drove down to LA about 3 weeks ago, I stopped for gas and it wouldn't start. It was super-hot and the temp guage was climbing. When I turned the key: click-click-click. I don't know if that's the same as crank-crank-crank, though (I assume that means pistons are moving, too). However, if it is the same, my fix (after several push-starts) was to clean the battery contacts--they were pretty corroded. That did the trick.
