I'd no more put my daughter in a GM or a Ford than I'd put her on a motorcycle.
This may not be THE 900 for this father/daughter team, but I would not discourage him from buying ANY early 90's 900. They're very safe cars. Expensive to fix? Maybe, but gosh I'd hate to see the child roll over in a Ford!
I think a good strong repair history is a great plus, and the practice of taking the car to a good strong SAAB mechanic for a pre-purchase inspection is an even better suggestion.
As for the temp reading being so high, I learned on this very board that anything past 1/2 is questionable. I also learned that when test driving the vehicle, go to a lot and sit idle for a bit to see if in fact that temperature guage rises on up. If so, you've got a good candidate for a bad head gasket.
Best of luck to you and your daughter...with the car, AND the college experiences!
Julia
