As others have mentioned, the head gasket on the 2.1 L engine will most likely fail at some point. My '88 Turbo has a faulty temp gauge that consistently shows it runs hot but my mechanic *swears* it's the gauge, not the thermostat, radiator, water pump, cooling fans, etc. We fought about it several times and I'm at 292,000 miles so now I believe him.
The automatic transmission is just plain icky and the 5 speed can fail in spectacular fashion if not treated nicely.
Malfunctioning AC won't leave you stranded but is a pain (in the butt and the wallet) to fix. Expect an alternator failure at some point but that's nothing unique to Saab. The next time I need one I'm going to get one from a local rebuilder versus an off-the-shelf rebuilt one or a new ($!) one. Cruise control can fail but again that's a convenience item. Same goes for the seat heaters.
Many front end parts fail sometime around the mileage you're reporting. This list includes, but is not limited to:
- ball joints
- shock mounts
- tie rod ends
- CV boots/joints
- inner drivers (not overly common, but expensive)
Not to scare you away with this list but I love these stupid cars. I just "upgraded" a '97 Volvo with a '92 T and I couldn't be happier.
