Did you get a chance to check the new shaft ujoints? if not try the hair dryer to loosen it up. Since you did not say that the steering was only stiff when cold, I am assuming that your steering rack is OK. The only other things I can think of are: a really loose rack or shot balljoints or totally shot tierod ends or loose control arm mounts or a control arm that has cracked but has not yet snapped. If balljoints get loose enough to allow movement when you steer, they can make steering stiff. However, I doubt that this is the problem. You can check your balljoints and other suspension components by jacking up each front wheel with a makeshift spacer(old spark plugs) between the upper control arms and the body to remove pressure from the balljoints. Then squeeze on the balljoints with a big pliers and pry with a big screwdriver to detect any movement. When the wheel is off, you can inspect every ting else for looseness. I still suspect that the lower ujoint on the used steering column shaft was a little sticky and not almost floppy loose like it should be. back to hair dryer.
