this is a real devil. Sorry my guesses did not give an easy fix. After all that work it really is tough when the problem is not cured when you turn the key! Alex's good suggestions added the alt light check, but i think you said the alt light did go on in the "run" key position before starting. At this point, I am beginning to suspect that your single bad belt was slipping under load. The pop could have been the other belt snapping. The cause could be just loose belts and the new ones plus new bushings should solve it. I hope you ordered a bushing for the adjusting arm/support that bolts to the block next to the fire wall. If that is shot, the alternator can shake and also the force from the belt tension will twist the alternator in the "long bolt" mount and the belts will end up uneven(outer looser than inner).
The other thing that could have caused the belt to pop is a problem with binding of the actual shaft of the alternator. How does the alternator spin out of the car... any roughness? any slop? If so, this problem is often the end result of over tightened belts, perhaps to compensate for bad alternator mount bushings. Time for a rebuilt alternator. Good luck and keep us posted.
