I actually tried both an '88 and a '90 ECU in my '89 S. The '88 worked fine, except that as mentioned, A/C didn't work. In retrospect that appears to be coincidental, as I now have the proper '89 ECU, and the A/C has the same problem (likely relay).
When I put a '90 ECU in, I couldn't even start up. I'm suspecting it must have been bad, or maybe somehow completely incompatible. I don't have all the PNs with me today, but they're archived in my previous posts re: this matter.
My AMM also *coincindentally* died somewhere along the way in this whole process. Everything (except A/C) was working when I had the '88 ECU in. I took it out and went on vacation for a month. When I came back and installed an '89 ECU, I got flashing shift up combined w/ CE light, and limp home drivability issues, which were solved with a new (rebuilt) AMM.
My idle now is relatively steady. When first started up, it will exhibit some of the harmonic oscillating behavior KG is describing, but not nearly in that kind of amplitude...we're talking maybe 1-200rpm peak to peak, as opposed to 400. I don't recall a significant idle difference when the '88 box was in there. Like I said, the '90 box wouldn't even start it up.
Cheers,
'Roo
