I have a couple of belt-related questions. First, I have an '88 900S with 174K on it. The A/C hasn't worked for the past 6 years. I don't plan to fix it, so I was wondering if I need the A/C belt? Is there any power advantage to taking it off? Does it need to be on for balance? The problem with the A/C is a coolant leak in one of the connectors, and it's $800 to fix it, but I believe the compressor is just fine (spins freely).

Second, I have a sharp, loud chirping noise that appears to be coming from the belts when I first start the car. It's worse in cold weather, but either way it goes away as soon as I drive off. It APPEARS to be associated with the power steering, but I can't be sure. The reason I say that is because it tends to be slightly louder when steering out of my drive way. But then it goes away. After reading the articles here, I'm going to check the tensioners, look at the state of the belts, and try the chalk mark on the harmonic balancer. With my luck, it'll be the balancer. Just wanted to see if there was anything else I could check.

Lastly, I live in central NJ. Does anybody have a recommendation as to a good SAAB mechanic in that area? I used to go to the SAAB guys in Princeton, but I'm convinced they are less than top-notch. Thanks!
