I haven't done alternator yet, and i've heard it can be as easy as a 10 minute job to as difficult as a 4 hour job, depending how you go about it, as apparently the space for the bushings is TIGHT and it's hard to squeeze them in there.
I've heard that the easiest way involves removing the oil filter in order to get to the alternator, so i'm going to try to co-incide my attempt with an oil change! I have yet to consult the Bentley manual but will probably do a lot more reading about it before i attempt (and probably speak with somebody i know who has done them and called the repair "easy"). I've already bought the bushing from a site sponser, and they're pretty cheap.
My squeal is inconsistent, but if yours occurs more often than not, i would have an assistant start the car while you have your hand on the alternator (but not pushing on it). If the car begins to squeal, push/hold the alternator to keep it from shaking, and see if the squeal goes away, if it does it's a decent shot that is where the problem lies. Either way, shaking i believe will shorten the life of the alternator, so it's not a bad idea (although not vital) to fix the shaking.
As well, before you crawl under the car to mark the HB, check out my pic in the thread below (let me know if you can't locate the pic and i'll email it to you), as there are a few ways to mark the HB. I marked the faces of the pulleys, but you can also mark the part of the pulleys BETWEEN the belts. Since the belts are not the same size, marking the lines on the belts themselves won't match up afterwards, even with a good HB.
