Carl is correct about the bearing stuff. If the inner clip was left out the rotor would most likely limit the travel on the bearing but would continue to get thinner as it grinds. Something else that may have happened is that the bosses that the caliper bolts go through got bent. If they were used to support the knuckle on one side while the brg. was getting pressed in they might have bent, causing the caliper to be too close to the rotor. (I did this on a Lexus once.) If so they can possibly be beaten (carefully) back into place. On said Lexus I bent one of the bolt holes while pressing and was able to straighten it by placing a one end of straightedge on the unbent boss with the other end over the bent boss to measure and hitting it with a 40 oz. ball peen hammer. It really didn't take much to straigthten.
