Went shopping in the morning for the special E-16 Torx socket and the head gasket for my 1982 Saab 900i Auto Lhd.

Got every thing in Germany, Saarbruecken. Drove more than 220 km just for the parts. (Living in Luxembourg, only nasty Saab shops here).
Old Saab 900 GLs was running fine, manged to get 26 mpg!

Removed the head bolts, two 'normal' 17mm and the others the E-16 Torx head bolts.

Lifted the head - wow!

Between cylinder 2 and 3 I can see a crack in the head! And near cylinder 4 the gasket was gone... Remember the last head job was done 103 kms ago!

Head was in a machine shop, new valves and the surface was skimmed. I have the proof (photos!). Called the machine shop, will give me a new head for free.

Happy!

But the strange cracked gasket near cylinder 4 seems to be caused by the Saab Main Dealer Workshop in Luxembourg!!! Unsensible handling of the gasket I suppose.

I took pictures of all stages work progress, just to be on the safe side for the complain about the bad work done in the workshop before.
(Sadly I can use only the 'normal' camera, digital is away with friends. Need to wait for development of the photos)

Now I'll examine the block and all surrounding. Best chance of cleaning and derusting the engine. Maybe I'll paint the block. Has to be spotless after all work is done. Rocker cover is polished to mirror finish, 3.5 hours of labour last night. (Cleaning, sanding, three stages polishing)

Should I polish the intake manifold too? Even more sanding, very rough alloy casting.

Reassembling wil take place after I collected the head in the noon. Gladly the machine shop is working on Saturdays :-)

Can a head be cracked due to improper handling? Head was perfect (tested) after leaving the machine shop!

RS - many thanks to you! I owe you some pints for the perfect manual!

Will use for the reassembling only Torx bolts, already purchased at the Saab Shop in Saarbruecken, germany. And all rubber grommets for the vaccum hoses. Expensive, but the only way getting the Saab back on the road healty!

Can you suggest any other work to be done while the head is off the engine?

Will report in the evening the progress.

Happy working on your Saab's!
