I change yesterday on my 1982 900i, LHD, Automatic the front brake pads. Before I changed the brake hoses and fluid.
Of course I bleeded the whole system.
Everything seems to work...
Now's the time for the brake pads I thought.
Purchased the Special tool from Saab before!
Removed the old pads, cleaned before and after the caliper. Caliper seems to be fine, no leaks or serious rust. Only a bit surface rust where the brakepad dust wasn't removed the years before.
Pushed and rotated the pistons back until they were even with the caliper housing.
Fitted the new brake pads together with anti noise deviceses, as recomended by Saab Workshop.
Repeated the process on the other front wheel.
After I finished all work, I made a test drive.
Wasn't very successful, Saab seems to have lost all her power. Front brakes are binding, the brake disc was red after only 7 kms!
Hand brake was released while changing the pads. Of course I tested the function of the handbrake before the test drive - seems to be fine. Four (4) clicks till the brake was blocked. That's very fine on every car in the world!
Now I'm so desperate about the most unrealiable car in world. I don't know where to look in order finding the fault.
I've changed on a lot cars the pads, this never happend before to me!
Everything was clean and neat before I changed the pads. I even washed the wheel arches and the suspension. If changing the brake fluid there's the most important thing: working as clean as possible. Brake fluid is brand new, from a freshly purchased, sealed container! DOT 4 from Lucas.
I still love the design and driving style of the Saab 900 (Classic Style) but I'm really desperate about the front brake. Such a funny construction the hand brake to the front wheels... Unbeliveable!!! IMHO: RUBBISH!!!!
I'll put the Saab now on display in my garage and will drive for the rest of the summer a trustworthy car from England. A Mini, Jaguar, Rolls or my beloved Vanden Plas 4 litre R.
In my collection are now three Saab's: 1982 Saab 900i LHD, 1989 Saab 900 Turbo RHD (with troubles in the manual gearbox) and a 1986 Saab 900 Convertible (drivetrain missing).
None of them are driveable, all of them are low mileage and in good to pristine condition. No rust or too many owners before. Always serviced at main Saab dealer workshops.
BUT NOT DRIVEABLE!!!
It's really sad and a very poor reputation for Saabs.
I've learnt to drive in an 'Infamous' Jaguar Series 2 - no faults beside the normal service ever happend to her. She's a 1974 Jaguar XJ12 with (of course) Automatic. Still in the collection of my father. And driveable...
It's maybe sad for you all out there in the Saab world reading my bad experiences - but I'm really disappointed.
Saab has a very high reputation in Luxembourg, Europe for reliability and safty. And style.
