This past week I had about $750 worth of work done on my 1992 convertible, in all they replaced: a left upper ball joint, a shock bushing, a fuel pump seal, 2 tie rod ends and a fog light lens. Also they did an alignment. After all of that, they didn't pass my car for the inspection b/c of a small exhaust leak. According to the repair shop, the local dealer that installed my new muffler/ exhaust last year didn't weld it to the exhaust pipe and only clamped it. This apparently resulted in a small exhaust leak. The repair shop said they had no means to weld the connection and suggested that I go to a muffler place and ask them to do it.

I paid my bill and drove my rejected car from the repair shop. Within less than 30 miles I heard a horrible metallic grinding noise and the car started coasting to a stop. I pulled over and had the car towed back to the repair shop. Their assessment? A coincidental transmission failure. They offered to confirm their diagnosis by pulling out the transmission (for $350), and estimated that a rebuilt manual transmission would cost me around $3000.

I have had NO problems with the transmission before this occurence: no slips, grinds, gear pop outs... nothing. Until I drove my car home from the repair shop, it had been shifting smoothly and has a 6 month old new clutch to boot! Can a transmission just magically "go", with absolutely no symptoms of its imminent demise? Is there a possibility that they may have done something to bring on the transmission's failure? (Incidentally when the car was up on the flatbed I noticed that the exhaust pipe was hanging about 2-3 inches below the rest of the undercarriage... is that normal?)

Finally is the $3000+ estimate appropriate? Or should I just sell the car? Btw-- everything else is in good shape on the car and the car had been driving well before this.

Your thoughts????

Thanks in advance for your advice.
