"Dave... this is the voice of saab reason... you are at a significant fork in the road...."
1) if all you're asking for is a utilitarian vehicle, yeah I'd teach myself how to fix the mechanical issues above or pay to have them done. Voila - $500 for a serviceable vehicle. Run that baby into the sunset.
2)However, if what you want/expect/need is a car that acts/looks/is reliable as "new" or "not 20yrs old", ESPECIALLY if this is your only car and not a hobby/sideproject... just be aware that from what you describe and the tone, there's mountains of stuff still waiting to ruin your day (probably enroute to something more important that standing on the side of the road in the rain cursing your luck) - probably most of the original suspension from bushing-to-bearing; the famous brakes; bits of drivetrain/trans in painful $500-$2000 spasms; coolant sys rehab; to name just a few vital aged systems taken for granted but eventually wear out after 20years. Add to that the usual wear items = big money & bigger inconveniences. I know 'cause I brought my '85 900S back from previous owner's grocery-getter status to my daily (and only) war machine. Love the car, but a wildly unreasonable journey, DIY or not.
