Just to toss my own $0.02- I've owned more saabs than I can count on two hands. Having experienced just about everything that can go wrong, I have developed some policies to which I adhere. Hence,
1. Never buy/own an automatic. Unless it's a parts car.
2. No 8 valve N/A engines (sorry 8v guys). They're just too slow.
3. No more 4 doors. Once you have the hatch you never go back.
4. No rust buckets or hints of rust. No sense in throwing money at a powertrain if the caboose that holds it all is ready to fall apart.
5. Must learn basic DIY repair tasks, or you might as well set your wallet on fire.
6. *Must be turbo. Similar to rule 3, once you own a turbo model, you will find the N/A engine unsatisfactory.
*This rule is optional in my mind, but it's damn important.
Basically, I agree with Dan with the exception that unless the car has some features of merit (thus the reason for my policies) it's probably not worth sinking money into it. I would drive it until it can be driven no longer and wait for a clean, well maintained SPG or 9000 aero to come along. Just my opinion though...
