The spacer tool is needed because the pressure plate and slave cylinder are too big to come out of the well they're installed into if the fingers are released. Normal procedure is that your buddy pushes in the clutch and then you put the spacer ring into the space the opens up at the base of the fingers. I remember seeing only one spacer ring for my 88S pressure plate - so I can't speak to that dilema.
Are you separating transmission and engine? If so you don't have to remove the p-plate and slave until you pull the engine off the trans. That said, MAKE SURE that you remove the input shaft (running through slave and p-plate) before attempting to separathe the engine and trans.
