Servicing automatic transmission

Just got through changing the filter and forward sump gasket on a an autotrans ('92 900S).
When I drained the transmission (via the drain plug in the fwd sump pan) I definitely got less than the prescribed 8 liters of ATF. The transmission had been leaking, but I had been trying to keep the level up. I have to admit, though, that I've always found it difficult to read the dipstick the way you're supposed to (warm engine, running, in park) because the level on the dipstick isn't very distinct.
Not knowing so much about automatic transmissions, my question is: are there places in the automatic transmission that can hold a significant quantity of ATF, as in several liters, even with the forward sump completely removed from the transmission?
