Like said earlier....overfilling is very bad. Drain it and refill it with about 3.5 quarts. Start at 3 and check and work your way up with the final .5 quart. That way you won't run the risk of overfilling again. It's a pain to get the level right sometimes. That should put you about at the proper level.

The best way to check that dipstick is after you refill, wipe it off, put it back in and start the car. Select each position (P,R,N,D,1,2) and back again, pausing about 5-10 seconds in each position. Then with car still running, pull dipstick, wipe, re insert, pull again and check. I try to keep the level between the two indentions on the stick.

Make certain you are filling with Type F ONLY. Any other type of fluid will ruin the trans fairly quickly.
