The more I think about the tow truck stretching the timing chain, the less likely it sounds.

Regarding the oiler tubes, I rebuilt them (nipples & O-rings) a few months ago when I replaced the valve cover gasket.

What can go wrong with them? I plan on taking off the valve cover and taking a look at them.

For what it's worth, the sound really sounds like a loose chain rubbing against a hard surface. I had a mechanic friend look at the car and he thought it was the chain slapping. We localized the sound using a big screwdriver stethescope and it's loudest right where the timing chain upper guide sits (the guide is new too). He said that the sound didn't sound like a valve problem.

Anything sound like a loose timing chain, but ISN'T ?
