Thanks for the feedback gents,
JohnK: So far I've only removed plug from cyl. #4. I was discouraged and it was about 24deg. out with a windchill of like 5 so I packed it in and haven't touched it since, besides I couldn't fell my fingers anymore. I worked as a mechanic's assistant(my neighbor) for 6 years during high school & college, I've built motors before but never an oddball motor like this one. I cringed when I saw the front part of the motor, have no idea how I would get it all back together, especially the timing gear, from the ground. I have nothing to lose with your suggestion for the alumaseal/barsleak solution so I'll give it a try.
p.s. what happened after last 75k miles?
JD From LA: as I stated above, I can do almost anything an my cars, it's just a matter of how much time I'm willing to dedicate to it. IF I could find someone to do the job for $600 I would do it, but not for $1000, I could buy a nice Volvo or another Saab from the local Saab/Volvo guy down here(volvobylnb.com). He's the local Volvo/Saab certified mechanic way out in the countryside near me, acres & acres of Volvos & Saabs, quite a site, I don't know how reasonable he is on repair$, but he's really cool, gives you a car while he keeps yours while fixing it(usually some old Volvo). I'll be checking with him in a week or two to see if he's even interested, maybe we'll make a trade deal for one of his other Saabs or Volvos. He'g got a full-time body shop operation too and is usually pretty busy.
PJ: how in the world can you drive a car with a bad head gasket for over a year? Doesn't the coolant leak into the crank case? Amazing that it could still run like this and not kill the bearings or overheat...I definitely don't want to kill my motor...yet.
berkeleybull: that $1800 mechanic was either smoking crack or didn't want to do the job, that's what we did at the station when we got a pain-in-the butt job and didn't want to do it(unless it was a regular customer of course). No way does a head job cost that much, not even on a Swedish turbo. You might want to check out L&B's '94 900S conv. (http://volvobylnb.com/forsale.html)
I'll be posting my adventures as the weather starts to warm-up(50deg. this weekend!!!woo hoo!).
