If the sealant doesn't work and you need a car right away or don't have time or a place to do it, I'd junk the car and replace it. The car that I put sealant was eventually donated to charity. No head gasket problems, suspension rust, it was a Ford Taurus.
Given your experience, the headgasket should be a piece of cake. Don't be put off by your unfamiliarity with the Saab engine, one of the reasons there are so many active folks on this BB is that they are fun to work on and designed to be maintained. I think aircraft heritage has something to do with it.
The headgasket kit costs just over $100, and a shop can plane the head and put in new valve seals for just over $100. Figure on a Saturday to pull the head...take to shop...put back in the next Saturday. If you decide to do it, I'd give Jim at sobstory(site sponsor) a call 800-583-0370, for some coaching and the right parts at a good price.
Misc items: Timing cover stays put. The key is to get the cams right at true top dead center. Easy to be 1 tooth off. Read up on bb posts, have a Bentley manual, and read townsendimports.com info. Good luck.
