On most cars, the timing chain either faces the front or the side of the engine compartment and is (relatively) easy to get to. It's just a matter of disassembly.
Since the timing chain resides about an inch from the firewall (bulkhead for our English friends) on a SAAB 900, people tend to worry about it more because repairing it is much more involved, MAY (not always)require engine removal, or result in an immobile car for more time than it should.
Back when SAAB was buying Triumph Dolomite engines for the 99 series, there were issues with the timing chain. SAAB changed to a double row chain when they brought out their own "B" engine for the 99 in 1973. That cured the problem.
The "H" motor found in most 900s has a single chain but a much improved tensioner and no auxiliary (jack)shaft for the distributor drive. Even the early versions have a better tensioning system than the those old Triumph engines but the reputation lives on.
There are more vulnerable points on a SAAB 900 than the timing chain. Head gaskets, turbo shaft seals, differential pinion bearings, a-arm bushings, and lower a-arms (from people slamming into curbs) are more prone to failure than the timing chain.
