In either case your question is best answered by doing some simple diagnostic work. First, buy a bentley manual, then measure the extension of the timing chain tensioner. The tensioner is under the AC compressor and is very easy to get at. So long as you do not rotate the flywheel while the tensioner is disassembeled you can measure its extension as much as you want.
If the extension is still in the reasonable range (note that Saab suggests timing chain replacement base soly on tensioner extension) and you've still got lots of rattley noise there are two good solutions.
The first, as Ari suggested, is to replace the upper timing chain guide on the inside top of the valve cover. New rubber pads are priced on the order of 10 dollars and they are really easy to get at. Note that you'll also need a new valve cover gasket if you crack open the valve cover.
Option two is to change the oil and put new heavier weight synthetic oil in the case. I live in minnesota and saw a dramatic reduction in timing chain/valve cover rattle when I repalced the upper guide and also switched to Rotella T 5W40 ($13 per oil change), an "almost" synthetic motor oil. I've heard that improved flow rates at cold temperatures is partly to thanks for the reduction in valve clatter.
Seriously though - if you're concerned change the oil and check the extension if the noise doesn't go away.
