My '85 900T is dying a slow, cruel death (long) Posted by Steve Schwedland [Email] (#2368) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Steve Schwedland) on Thu, 31 Mar 2005 17:54:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Last year, after I wrecked my '89 900TC, I picked up an '85 900T to drive for $188. To get it running, I had to rewire the engine compartment (a lot of the wires had disintegrated) and fix the shifter/ignition box where a lot attendant had forced the shifter out of gear without the key. I got it running and started driving it, I work at home and don't really drive around much. I did drive it from Denver to Indy for the Indy 500 last year though.
Then, in the fall, the Tranny went out and I swapped in a used (not rebuilt) tranny from the local Pull-n-Save. I also put in a leak free power steering rack at this point because I found it in the same car the tranny was in, it was cheap and I could do it easily with the engine out. I realized after the fact that either one of the Axle drivers was bad or the inner u-joint was bad. In any case, one of the axles is loose on the tranny end and needs attention.
A couple of weeks later we got our first cold spell and I noticed that the Harmonic balancer was going out (the shrieking noise it makes is indescribable). It started out just making a little noise when the engine was really cold, but now it's pretty regular. I've driven it all winter like that and it has worked out.
Then, about a month ago, the car overheated and I realized that there is a short somewhere in the wiring to the radiator fan which caused the overheating. I could drive it as long as I didn't have to sit in traffic. I kept my eye on the temp gauge and as soon as the temp got above 3/4 I would pull over and let it cool down. Keep in mind that I don't drive it much.
Last week I noticed that I was losing coolant and I couldn't find any leaks, so I grabbed a mirror and stuck it in front of the tailpipe. It fogged up immediately, which leads me to believe that I have a bad head gasket.
So now the car is parked in front of my house and I need to figure out what to do with it. I have switched the insurance over to my '88 900TC which I picked up for $300 to rebuild and is now drivable (there is no back window, but it's getting warmer here VBG).
This car has a straight and rust free body, the paint is not too good and the interior is pretty rough. It has served it's purpose for me, giving me transportation while I worked on the convertible, but I am through working on this car.
What do y'all think I should do with it?
