Clutch pedal low at first, then OK

I've just got back from vacation and was greeted with a clutch problem. A couple of days after I returned from vacation, I noticed the clutch pedal was going quite low to the floor before disengaging and would engage very close to the floor also.
Over the last two years, I've had to top up the hydraulic resevoir maybe two or three times. I checked it and it was low. So I topped it up. The clutch did not get immediately better. I drove it for another two days with the low pedal. On the third day, as I was driving around town, the pedal returned to normal, with full pressure and length of travel.
The next morning, it was low again, but as I drove around it again returned to normal.
Can anyone explain what's going on? Does the clutch line just need to be bled since it ran low on hydraulic fluid? I'm more curious than anything.
