Heater Valve Replacement

I recently acquired a '92 900 Hatchback. Soon after, the hoses broke off at the firewall. I have the hoses running together. As the summer goes on, I am worried about overheating as I can't pull the heat off the engine. I have to run the a/c to keep the temp from 1/2 to 3/4. I have both the Bentley and Chilton manuals. Which heater valve replacement method would be easier? Dropping the knee bolster and removing the heater core or just the heater valve itself? I have done a search on this BB. Bentley shows the heater valve only method via the long handle T (ball-type). I do have "Saabina" (86 900 T), but she is not what she used to be with a slipping clutch and the rising price of premium gas. OEM or aftermarket ? I have seen a Scantech on eBay for about $70. A local shop wants $300 to do the job.
