Your response reminds me of a problem with my good old 88 900 [retired to race track after insurance company had it totaled from slight accident damage with 270K]. There was a problem with getting into 5th. It turned out to be "dog bone" or "dog chew toy" like coupler that had rotted probably due to oil, age or both.
PS: a wall recently turned the lights out on Old Blue's racing carreer.
