My manual says U.S. 2.1L car has a GM54714, so the 7 = .78 ratio (25 and 32 teeth primaries).
The manual also says that the Turbo cars with catalytic converter (U.S.) of that year have the same gearing. Which is silly, because you want the gearing to best take advantage of the engine's particular power/torque characteristics. And they are very different.
So why did both a turbocharged and nat-aspirated car got the same gearing? I assume they used the same gearing to save money, or maybe there were fuel economy standards that they had to meet. My bet is on the former.
Your 2.1L has a nice flat torque curve but it's at around 120 and bumps up to 130 lb-ft max. The Turbo on the other hand has a peaky torque curve but at around 3000 rpms, it's maxing at around 190 ft-lbs. So in fourth, the Turbo is pulling about has hard as your car, but as the boost hits, it begins to pull a _lot_ harder than your car can (peak torque is at 2800 for the Turbo). You, meanwhile, are languishing because you simply don't have the power to accelerate the car given the gear you're in.
The cars _should_ be geared differently but they're not - it looks to me like they're geared for the Turbos.
