I must have hit a nerve.
But there's a gap in your logic: somehow you can justify driving 125 simply because a small minority drives poorly-maintained vehicles at the speed limit?
And Jeff T's logic spans a big gap, too: somehow you can justify driving 125 on a road that was, at best, designed to be traveled at 70 (U.S. Interstates) just because they do it in another country where the roads were designed for traffic at vastly higher speeds?
Endangering yourself and others by driving that fast on U.S. roads of any size is selfish and, in the event of an accident, usually fatal. If you don't believe me, run the math on such nontrivial factors as human reaction times, distance traveled before reaction, kinetic energy, stopping power and braking distances (for fun, see how braking distances differ between 60 and 80). KE=1/2mv^2 is most decidedly NOT on your side when you speed. You can break speed limit laws, but you can't break the laws of physics.
There are laws other than speed limits, too, serious laws: reckless endangerment, vehicular manslaughter, vehicular homicide, etc. In Georgia, VH is punishable from 2 to 15 years. In Washington, max sentence is life in prison.
The leading cause of death among young people in the U.S. is traffic accidents (roughly 2-3 out of 5 deaths). For males, the risk factor for dying in a car crash is double that of females. About 40% of fatal crashes involving young people are due to speeding. (Source - CDC)
Here's what it takes to minimize the risk of injury at 125 (still, no guarantees of safety). Think a Saab is this tough? NO street car is anywhere near it. You'll want a HANS device, too, and a much better seat than the one pictured. Also remember you'd be wearing a 5 or 6 point seatbelt:
