I just realized that this "shuddering" you speak of has the smell of a bad fuel feed pump. A bad feed pump will fail to provide adequit fuel to the pressure pump when you load the engine down. Another classic symptom is loss of power when going around a left hand curve. A very unpleasant effect on a winding mountain road. Pre-pumps are cheap and fairly easy to replace (when your tank is empty).
