New to me...2.1L Block Water Jacket Ports Eroded Posted by JustinHiFi [Email] (#829) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JustinHiFi) on Thu, 15 Dec 2005 23:03:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well a simple headgasket now seems to have turned into an engine replacement. I have 178k on my 91 900S 2.1L 5spd. Owned since 80k, Light Pressure Turbo since 110k. First headgasket failure. I figure im fairly lucky considering...PS- I have done coolant flushes with Mercedes Blue every 30k...
I have a ported and polished 2.3L head from a 92 9kT to go in, so the condition of the 2.1L did not matter too much. However, there is no pitting at all on it!!! Started to clean up the block, and found that all the water ports below the cylinders were eroded...2 of the 8 on top were as well. The other six were perfect. Looking on #1 lower left where the HG blew...did not look so good at all...
This one is the worst of all, seems to probably sped up the HG failure.
What are your thoughts? I was going to JB weld to fill it, but figure that it will continue to erode, and end up blowing in time again. Just putting it back together seems ill faited, should blow rather soon overall. I am a person to solve the problem, not just fix it for the time being....so my best alternative was to swap it out with another inspected engine.
Was thinking of keeping the 2.1L as I loved the setup I had...just loved it. Then was thinking no no, go with a more reliable 2.0 NA...then thoughts of going for a 2.0T engine and bumping up the boost to regular levels..I just love the responsiveness of the high compression engines with 6-8psi...
Thoughts?
Thanks,
JustinHiFi
