My recollection tells me that it's easier to stick the spg engine on the automatic than to change the car over to a stick. All you must do to put the auto under the spg engine is swap the flywheel for the flexplate and change the oil pickup tube and throttle body over. Then you just cram it back in the convertable, no pulling out the seats and pulling up the carpet and swapping the shift ass'y and installing a clutch pedal and slave cylinder and... But, is the convertable a turbo? BTW I am in the process of putting a 5 speed into an '88 automatic turbo convertable right now. Same engine, no change there.
'89 is a good year for the 5 speed and at 88K it should have plenty of go left in it. Good luck.
