JoeW, Kinda lost track here. What is your car and what is the problem? If you are trying to test the starter in place then there should be small yellow wire connected to a 1/4" spade connector on the back end of the starter motor. You have to get down and look under the intake manifold. The wire may not appear yellow anymore but it is the only small wire on a spade connector at the starter (it's actually on the solenoid but that's like part of the starter). That yellow wire should be energized when the key is turned to start. Test that with a voltmeter or test light. If it's working then connect a long wire to the battery + and carefully touch it to the spade lug where the yellow wire attaches. When you do this be sure that the car is in neutral with the key off or the engine may start! The engine should turn over. If not then you should make sure that the large red wire is securely connected and providing power to the starter motor before you pull out the starter motor for replacement. Good luck.
