RT, At 136,000 miles the Automatic tranny is about 2/3-3/4 to TYPICAL end of service. (Typical is 150,00-200,000 if well cared for). The Borg-Warner T-37 is a good old-fashioned 3 speed tranny. Not up to modern standards for 'performance' but as reliable as any old style 3 speed (GM T-350, Ford C-4/6, Chrysler T-8, etc). They are more expensive to rebuild though as the hard parts were captive items owing to an agreement between Saab and Borg-Warner and only a few pieces will interchange from the non-captive Borg-Warner T-35. Also, considering the labor involved in replacing the tranny in a C900, installing a used/salvage T-37 can be false economy so a properly rebuilt unit is the (economically) safe repair. Therefore, among the most expensive fixes on these cars is replacing the tranny (or engine). Having said that then what you should be wary of is; Serious collision damage (think chassis problems), serious rust, tranny problems and serious engine problems. Anything else would be an ordinary wear concern like you have with a 17 year old car and fixable within reason. Of course if there are a ton of those smaller 'fixable' problems then that's like one big problem, right? So inspect the service record. Regular oil changes are a must and make these engines run forever. Good luck, hope it's a gem!
