RT,
Hopefully the car will be cold when you arrive.
Check the motor oil level, brake fluid level, radiator expansion tank level, etc.
It should start right up after cranking for a few seconds. Walk to the back of the car and check the exhaust for signs of burning anti-freeze, sicky sweet smell. (possible head gasket failure)
Check the operation of all switches and components;
Air Conditioning
Wipers
Blower motor and position selector for heater, operate the temperature control knob and make sure it gets warm, wait a few minutes and then make sure it goes back to cold, center vents only blow cold air.
Lights
Operate power windows, make sure they are properly aligned when up, listen for wind noise caused by the windows when up (along with the convertible top being up)
Operate convertible top, parking brake must be engaged.
Directionals and 4-way flashers
Turn on the radio, make sure the antenna works
Open and close the doors, check the bottom of the doors for rust
Open the hood, check for rust on the inside of the hood where the hood meets the doors.
Check the condition of the wheels for curb rash and being bent.
Open the trunk, look for rust in the floor, verify the tool kit is there.
Look for rust on the wheel arches
Listen for front suspension noises, shock bushings, ball joints, etc.
And from a previous post:
Things that will cost the most to repair:
1.Transmission
2.Convertible top
3.Headgasket / Cooling system, ie: radiator, etc.
4.Steering Rack
5.ECU, specifically model year 1989
6.Shocks
7.Fuel Pump
But certainly don't let these things stop you from buying a classic 900 convertible.
I hope this helps and doesn't discourage you from buying a Saab.
