I have no problem with my clutch in New York traffic. Other opinions vary.
No, I would not pay more than $700 for a mint car where I know I will need to re-do the tranny. Just the tranny will cost him another 1300 if he doesn't know somebody. I would also place a wager that this car will need a head gasket.
Think about it. To make a safe daily driver out of a convertible from 1988, I replaced all the following (but I know people to get cheap OEM parts from). The car will need alternator regulator/brushes ($50), canvas top (450DIY, 900 professionally done), motor mounts ($200), head gasket on the replacement engine I had in my basement, clutch, turbo rebuild (100DIY, 350-600 professional), tune up (70), fuel pump rebuild (180 DIY), shocks, etc...
