The slave piston is chrome plated aluminum. If the chrome plating is not worn off or scraped, a rebuild is good as new. If not, you'd be wasting your time rebuilding. You can line up your ducks if you have access to used ones (an independent Saab repair shop might have a stack of them) and can cherry pick from the parts.
Master cylinders are a little more forgiving on a rebuild b/c you can hone the bore, thus removing any light imperfections, but if it's deeply pitted or scored, it's toast.
You should replace a noisy release bearing, because the next thing that happens is it will sieze up and wipe out the slave cylinder. And you will learn how to shift w/o a clutch to make it home. (why do I know this?)
