Last of the C900 5 speed trannies had poor design Posted by walt [Email] (#2707) [Profile/Gallery]

Just disassembled a 5-speed yellow stickered GM45714 transmission used on the last years of C900s without turbos. Still had a torn up reverse gear despite a reverse gear brake. Still had a ruined pinion bearing despite a filter built into differential cover and larger bearings. No way to drain tranny fluid, because case had no drain plug. Nor was there a magnet to hold hard ferrous metal that destroys bearings. Last problem were the 1/2 and 3/4 gear shift forks measured just under 6-mm thick when new. Older trannies had 10-mm or thicker forks. At least I can get a couple bucks by recycling the alloy case parts and brass forks.
