Yeah I haven't really seen any big improvements from 89 when the bigger rear pinion bearing was introduced.
The needle bearing sleeve on layshaft is probably the best improvemnt since after that, no shafts needs to be replaced.
The ones with the filter in diff cover have a magent though hiding behind the filter, but in some rare cases it was not installed from factory or that someone have forgot to install it after cleaning.
Lack of changing the trans oil every 30K miles is probably the main reason for all early failures of pinion bearings.
