The automatic won't necessarily be "blah", just different. It has a different feel, different characteristics, and you really can't compare them to manuals. It won't throw you back in the seat as a manual does, yet when you look at the speedometer you're surprised to see you got up to speed as quickly as you did. I don't find mine noisy, and last tankful I got almost 27 mpg, and that's combined city/highway driving (highway speed is 70), all on a '87 turbo with 213,000 miles on it.
I get a kick reading some posts...."my clutch is shot, my synchros are shot, I have pinion whine, I have to double clutch" yet in the next breath they bash automatics as being short-lived and antiquated in design.
I bought this particular car as a compromise with my wife because it was an automatic so she could drive it too. A year or so later I bought another '87 T but a manual strictly for me. Although I got a bit better gas mileage I went back to the automatic as my daily driver because it made more sense because of the type of driving I do (city traffic/rush hour/stop and go).
I guess what I'm trying to say is both automatics and manuals have their good points and their bad points and both have their purposes and both have differing characteristics. Be mindful of the differences and remember them when deciding what your needs are. If having an automatic will put your wife behind the wheel with a smile on her face, that's a good thing.
