Slipped clutch cable

Last week when pulling out of my driveway and putting the shifter into first,I started to move forward and I felt and heard a "Stretching of cable" sound from under the car. Is it at all possible that a clutch cable could have slipped? My clutch pedel now engages just above the floor. Now, from a cold start and when I put the tranny into reverse, I sometimes grind it in...OUCH! Just like the clutch isn't opening enough to allow reverse to settle in.
The whole clutch ensamble/replacement is about four months old. The clutch still engages and holds tight i.e., no slippage at all. Could a line to the tranny have losened?
Have I gone mad or is this simptom real and correctable?
Thanks,
Zoots - '89 900 TConv.
