my perception may very well be off as to where the sound is coming from
when i installed the rebuilt axles (left and right side)
i found the outer cv for the drivers side axle was popping, i had thought at the time, "these are freshly repacked bearings (outer and inner)and perhaps they need to get worn in a bit",
after many miles the popping of the driver-side outer cv has toned down from very tight pop to almost non existence,
i guess the rebuilt axles i got should of just been called (axles)
any-how when i was setting alignment (the toe) i took a look at Bentley, and it said something along the line of (left and right side should have no more than a inch or a half an inch difference, and not to go over 5 inches on either-side,
the setting i did had driver-side was around 2 inches and passenger, at some 5 and a half(measuring of the rack arm), but the car drove straight with no pull and got 430 miles to a tank.
so i though fine ill let it go and have the alignment looked at later.
i tried to set the wheel to center, but found when bolting it in,
it had to be off to the right just a bit (wheel to post groves).
with all this the car sounded and drove fine, except for the drivers outer cv popping.(after putting on many highway miles the pop is to null as in almost gone)
so time came to have the alignment done (the toe), i thought they would adjust the rack arm, my 5 and a half" and my 2",
i had informed them about the measurement difference,
they looked at it slightly adjusted the driver-side and said i was all set
and said i may have to adjust the steering wheel a bit,
everything was all-good no noise sound of any kind, wasn't 60 miles down the road, when i came to a stop light i heard the knocking (sounds like inner driver knock but the strange thing is its only at 3rd gear and above.)
started with 3rd, then after 40 more miles 4th and 5th came knocking quiet at first, but became louder with more miles.
i was thinking of redoing the passenger-side c-flange and bearing
but what stopped me is (last time the inner driver went 1st and 2ed did the loud knock, now its the same kind of knock but with 3rd,4th,5th. 1st and 2ed has no sound.
"i was thinking wow - wait to you guys get a load of this." :)
now i don't know if the outer cv can do this kind of symptom, but i do know the driver side cv was popping and bad.
with the problem of the knock coming on so sudden and right after the alignment i had thought it may be related, so for a week when i hit 3rd,4th,5th i tried to bring the steering wheel back to the setting i had it at, (car was turning slightly to the right) did some hard core boosting the knock was gone in all gears.
at a rest area i pulled out the vice-grips and set the rack arm just a bit to bring the steering wheel to center (my last set had the wheel off to the right, in the 1 o-clock position, their setting had the wheel in the 11 o-clock position, at the rest area i got the wheel at 12 o-clock (with the rack arm)and the knocking is gone.
i was going to put it at 1 o-clock but thought to try it at 12 it turned out to be fine there.
now the car seems to run and sound great in all gears, but as to what was actually happening i have no clue.
i would hate to order new inner companion shaft, and tri-pod bearing to find out its the outer driver-side cv that just needs to be repacked,
and thanks for the help on this one.
