so my wife just got back from a vacation to see her sister. Back in town 24 hours. The car I put 220 miles on the day before, with several stop and restarts along the way, she killed it first day back. Karma? Black thumb? She will admit it too, she has somehow managed to kill all of our Saabs except A1 (the 1994 Aero). After she had it *towed* back from Irvine and I got home I determined that the starter died did the usual tests and then bump started it out of the driveway *in reverse* and drove around for 15 minutes. Then went to place with a nice long downhill, turned the engine off, coasted a bit, tried the starter without result, bump started it in 4th and drove home.

So, if you have a good battery turn the key and all of the idiot lights stay on, and the headlights don't dim (which means you aren't putting a load on the battery...) then the starter isn't. I swapped it out with one from another car that is apart, it's not much to do... but when you get into something like this I always find more to do, the poly bushings on the alternator and it's hold down were 50% - replaced them, did the alternator/waterpump pair, both heater hoses, all the upper hoses, but left the lower radiator hose for now. This is an 87 with oil only and It's getting the water turbo off another car so the lower radiator hose will get changed and some fittings added, but that's another weekend.

It may be the solenoid or the motor on the starter, I'll figure that out later and put the good pieces together with another good piece for a complete... good unit.


the answer to your question is, yes it can just flat quit without warning but it usually gives you some warning.
