Did the engine turn over and not catch? Or was there no starter engagement? If the later, then it is probably a dead battery in which case you could try to jump start it. The water pump runs on the same two belts as the alternator, so don't try to run the car for long when running the engine without the belts. The belts are identical, and cohabitate on the same pulley path. More than likely the damp carpet is the heat control valve break letting water in. Bypassing it would be OK if you can stand it this time of year! The heat control valve is an acrobats job to do -- difficult part to reach to take out, and you can expand your vocabulary when putting it in.
