I thought I had "automatic" dash lights too (88 900 convt auto).
Seems like after dark, the dash lights would come on after about 3-5 minutes. I recall the dash lights not working after driving into a filling station unitl for about 3-5 minutes after leaving.
I thought, how cleaver those SAAB engineers.
In time, my "automatic" dash lights quit altogether. One night, the dash lights remained extinguished and didn't come on. In the dark, I realized the dash lights don't work. Boy did my wife have a good laugh.
Well, today, I pulled the speaker and twisted the bulbs.
Now, the automatic dash lights whenever the key is in the ignition (and in the on position).
Oh, they are brighter than I expected. Seems like a new car (well almost).
I still think the Saab engineers are clever. Just not the guys in the automatic dash light department.
