The amount you put in does not come back to you at resale time on older European cars that's for sure. I got back a small fraction of what I put into my '87 325is. And this wasn't a beaten car. It was a two owner car which was well maintained but, at 155k, stuff just wears out. I didn't have to rebuild some of the stuff but I like my cars to drive like new, so I probably went above and beyond the average owner.
Old cars are great for an enthusiast who can DYI most of the work. But even if I had done all DYI on this one, I'd have still spent way more than it was worth, excluding the value of my time. Nor were some of the electronic problems it developed for the DYIer. Those were what really killed me. A major problem I noted was that an average mechanic can't work on a BMW -- nor can dealer mechanics used to working on newer models. They have no clue. At least some of the cost resulted from mechanics (and me) replacing stuff that wasn't the actual problem. Once you start guessing at a problem, you're in big, big trouble. And that was happening a lot. A good independent mechanic is critical.
Not dissing the hobby but people need to understand that older cars aren't a way to save money. You do it because you love it.
