Is it worth it to keep my car?

I've had my beloved 1993 Saab 900s for 5 and a half years, since 65k miles. It has about 200,000 now, and here's my story:
a year and a half ago, I got the clutch replaced and the mechanic accidentally didn't properly re-seat a seal, which ended up leaking out all the transmission fluid which I didn't discover until the pinion bearings started whining in higher gears and I had the problem diagnosed.
The leak was fixed, and the whine has decreased a bit, but I'm told that my transmission has likely suffered unknown damage. Could last 6 weeks, could last 6 years, who knows? (it's already been well over a year)
Recently the car has had intermittent trouble getting into 1st and 2nd gears (when it wont do one, it won't do both) but it's fine in 5th and reverse. What are the chances that this is the first signs of transmission failure?
I was planning on driving until the transmission failed, but now I have some expensive safety concerns that are making me feel like I need to say goodbye:
- front wheel joints need replacing (I was told around $500)
- U-joint/steering column needs replacing (also quoted around $500)
There are some other minor problems but those are the most dire. So... Is it worth dropping $1000 now on the wheel joints and steering column when my transmission might fail in the next few months? How much would a rebuilt transmission cost? I have regularly maintained this car and it has new brakes and rotors, the head gasket was replaced around 80k miles, clutch replaced a year and a half ago... no rust at all.
Thanks in advance for your feedback, you guys are really great.
